Michael “Mike” A. Hoffman, 82, Flora, met his Lord and Savior on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 31, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Delphi.
Mike was born to the late Dayton DeVere “Pete” and Martha E. Eikenberry Hoffman on Sept. 11, 1941, in Flora. He graduated from Flora High School in 1960. He then married his high school sweetheart, Judy Nipple, on Oct. 7, 1961, and she survives.
The Hoffman family has been a big part of the Flora community. Mike was known as Santa Claus for 34 years in Flora and was able to be Santa on Christmas Eve a few weeks ago at the nursing home with a smile on his face. Mike was very active with the Flora Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years. He was past president and a member of the Carroll County Firefighters Association. He was a project leader with Carroll County 4-H Club and a project judge. He was a project judge at Indiana State Fair. He was an active member of Flora Lions Club and a recipient of the Pete Award. Mike was on the chain gang for Carroll Football for years. The Hoffman family was very involved with Carroll High School football and basketball. Mike wrote for the Carroll County Comet and sold advertisements. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. He was a past board member of the St. Elizabeth Healthcare Residence Advisory Board.
Mike also worked for Eller Fertilizer and was a jack of all trades. He was an avid Purdue and Chicago Cubs fan. He was one of the original founders of Flora Summer League Softball. He and Judy ran Flora Cable Vision for more than 30 years.
Mike is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy; two daughters: Alice (Andrew) Tallackson, Michigan City, and their son, William DeVere, and Sara (Jeffrey) Overway, Logansport. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Darrell L. Hoffman and Gregory C. Hoffman.
Mike’s family invites friends to visit from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at Wheeler Family Funeral Home-Baker Chapel, 204 S. Center St., Flora, IN 46929. A celebration of Michael A. Hoffman’s Life is at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery and military honors by the Carroll County Honor Guard.
