Max J.”Baps” Houlton, 71, of Lafayette, began his eternal life with Jesus on Monday, May 13, 2019.  Max was born to the late Jerry and Marge (Zind) Houlton on June 9, 1947.  He spent his growing-up years in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, graduating from Black River Falls High School.  He went on to serve his country in the US Navy and attended Purdue University in West Lafayette to further his education.  While attending Purdue, he met the love of his life, Pam Barker, and they married on August 23, 1969, she survives.  Max received a degree in criminology from Purdue and was a campus police officer/detective for a number of years.  He eventually made a career change to pursue his passion and became a self-employed carpenter specializing in custom cabinets and other wood work.

Max’s faith was big, bold, and deep.  He was an active member of Elmwood Avenue Church of Christ and served as a life group leader for nearly 20 years.  He and Pam also volunteer at the food pantry at their church.  His generous heart and compassion for others was evident to all he came in contact with.  Along with spending time with his family, which was his favorite past time, Max enjoyed a good debate over differing opinions, fishing, golf and cooking – gourmet style.

(Melissa) Houlton of Battle Ground.  Daughter: Stephanie (Steve) Curwick of Romney.  Sister: Peggy Pierce of Kansas.  Three brothers:  Tim (Barbara) Houlton of California, Pat (Janet) Houlton of Minnesota and Kevin (Kristi) Houlton of Indiana.  His five grandchildren, who lovingly named him, “Baps”:  Anthony, Ethan, Chaunci, Chad and Courtney, and great grandchild: Finn.  Max is preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Dustin.

The family of Max “Baps” Houlton invite friends and family to a celebration of his life Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Elmwood Avenue Church of Christ in Lafayette.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, and the service will start at 11:00 AM.  Memorial donations may be made to the Elmwood Church of Christ Food Pantry.
