2023
Mary L. McCarty of Flora and Cutler passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.
Mary was born on November 23, 1935. She was the fourth of eleven children born to the late Chalmer and Melvina Smitley Sheets.
On September 11, 1955, Mary Sheets married the love of her life, William Lee McCarty. They were married for 56 years until William’s passing on June 16, 2012.
Mary was always active in the Carroll County Community. She drove a school bus for the Carroll School Corporation for 41 years. As a volunteer at the senior center in Flora, Mary would drive the shuttle bus and transport fellow seniors to doctor’s appointments, grocery stores and even made a few fun trips to the casinos. She was a supporter of Carroll County Special Olympics since 1979, Girl Scouts for 43 years, and Boy Scouts for 17 years. In 1979, the Girl Scouts awarded Mary the Juliette Low Award, which is the highest honor achievable. Mary received the Pete Award from the Flora Lions Club in 2006, for her countless years of service to the community. Her acts of service extended into her church life as well. Mary was an active member of the Bringhurst Community Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and cleaning the church for many years. If Mary had spare time, she enjoyed quilting and baking bread.
Mary is survived by her children: Bill and Debbie McCarty of Flora, Doris and John Budd of Darlington, IN, Robin and Terry Henson of Haubstadt, IN, Penny Creek of Delphi , Bob McCarty of Crawfordsville, and Doug McCarty of Lafayette. Seventeen grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren. Mary is preceded by her parents, 10 siblings, husband, grandson, and great-grandchild.
Mary’s family invites friends to visit 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, January 20, 2023 at Wheeler Family Funeral Home-Baker Chapel. Mary will be laid to rest at Ball Hill Cemetery with a private graveside service. Mary’s grandson, Pastor Aaron Henson & Pastor Brad Burton will be officiating. At Mary’s request all memorial donations are to be given to either the Bringhurst Community Church, (formerly the Bringhurst United Methodist Church) or Carroll County Special Olympics. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

January 21, 2023 1:50 pm ·I’m so sorry to have missed being able to make a call during Mary’s visitation, She was an incredible lady and a huge part of my teaching career at Carroll. She drove so many field trips for me and for others and was always wonderful as a driver, besides being a lovely person. I could always count on meeting her every morning on my way to school because she was already headed out with the Special Ed run…..and if I met her too close to Flora, I knew I was running late!
She was an immensely giving person and there are never enough of those in the world. She leaves a wonderful legacy in her children and her deeds in life. Bright Blessings on her memory and family.
