Laura L. Maxwell, 94, of Flora, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, June 9, 2022, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Delphi.

Laura Luella (Dillman) Maxwell was born July 14, 1927, at home to Raymond and Ester (Redding) Dillman near Bringhurst, IN.  She was a resident of Carroll County her entire life.

She met the love of her life Virgil Maxwell and was married on Christmas Eve 1945.  They celebrated more than 72 years of marriage before his passing April 2018.

Laura and Virgil were farmers raising Red Poll cattle, Duroc hogs, sheep and several other animals during their farming career. Laura and Virgil loved to square dance and would travel to different counties to do just that.  They were members of the Whirly Twirlers from Delphi and rarely missed a chance to dance. Laura and Virgil spent many years of going to auctions and collecting antiques, beautiful dishes and crystal.

In her first-grade class at Bringhurst there was a total of nine (9) in her class, two girls and seven boys.   Laura was a graduate of Flora High School in 1945, with twenty-four (24) graduates.  During High School she was in the Marching band and played the baritone horn, as a very younger girl playing the violin.  She played her piano and her organ frequently and enjoyed it immensely.  Laura worked at Essex Wire in Flora, then Delco Electronics in Kokomo until retirement.

She was a member of 4-H for eight (8) years, a former member of the Friendly Circle E.H. Club in Flora and Quilt Club.  Laura loved to sew, she made many square-dancing dresses and would make the neck ties that Virgil wore to match her outfits. She had sewn most of her life and was able to turn out beautiful garments for herself and her daughter. She was able to alter anything that just didn’t fit quite right. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and a little tatting. She was the best at patching and repairing to make something last. She enjoyed going to quilt club in her later years. Often times you would walk in her house as she was listening to her music of church hymns and songs with harmony.

She loved The Gaithers, Lawrence Welk, Elvis and his gospel music and loved hearing her niece Ginny Yoder singing some of her favorite songs.  You could always find a Hershey’s Symphony Chocolate bar nearby when her sweet tooth needed something.

She is survived by her son, Meredith L. (Emma) Maxwell, daughter Mary C. Fisher. Grandchildren, Stephanie (Louie) Martin, Jennifer (Terry) Nolley, Christopher (Brenda) Fisher and Darrick Fisher.

Great-Grandchildren, Jordan (Nicholas) Hamilton, Colton (Jenna) Martin, Jacob Arkwright, Kirstin (Daniel) Landers, Jamey Fisher, Jesey Fisher, seven Great-Great-Grandchildren. Also surviving a sister-in-law Rachael Maxwell, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her baby sister, Elizabeth Ann Dillman, (16 months), brothers Paul Dillman, Charles Dillman, Joseph Eugene (Gene) Dillman.

Many thanks to the caretakers that helped her to remain in her home as long as she did and Comfort Keepers for all the help they have given us.

    Meredith, Mary and family,

I just saw where your Mom passed away, my thoughts and prayers to your family at this difficult time. Laura lived a lot of life in her 94 years. She always had a smile and was willing to help you out with anything you needed when I was growing up. She and your Dad were great neighbors and friends to our family. I cannot make it to her viewing, but please know that I am sending prayers to you all. Cling tight to your many wonderful memories!! Every time I came to the corner of the gravel road and 18, I would look their way and many times one of them was outside doing something and I would toot and wave. They were just a part of our neighborhood forever! You were both blessed to have such wonderful parents!!
